On the Stones App

In days gone by dockers used to hang around outside the gates hoping to be picked for a day’s work. “On the stones” it was called.

The choosing of who got some work was arbitrary and open to multiple forms of abuse. The practice was also present in other sectors and represents pure exploitation and disregard for one’s fellow man.

Thankfully, we now live in more enlightened times: there’s apps for all that now. No more hanging about hoping for work – you hang about somewhere, anywhere, awaiting a notification that you have got a job for a couple of hours.

Thanks to the development of labour laws workers now have a contract they can rely on – ‘the zero-hour contract’.

All we need now is child labour and we’ll be as well off as in the good old days.
